Weka Walks offers a total nature package combining walking experience, minimum two night’s accommodation, home-cooked cuisine and warm Kiwi hospitality. The Walks are over Mt Huia Farm and Glen Tui Farm and include areas of pastureland and native bush. You stay in the same comfortable accommodation each night without the need to relocate. Single party bookings mean you can make up your own group of up to 8 (depending on “couple configuration) and enjoy the full use of Hodd Cottage. These are a true “designer" holiday, with a choice of challenging and easy walks, as well as some short Department of Conservation reserves also located nearby. Guests can decide what trails to follow, in what order, and what other activities of the many that are offering in the area they would like to do in conjunction with the walks.

Tui Walk
A full day hike over Glen Tui Farm and through the unspoilt beauty of the 700 acre Titirangi Reserve, described as one of the North Island’s best representations of lowland forest vegetation. Mosses and lichens under a dense canopy of tall podocarp trees are a feature in this unspoilt stand of native bush.

Parts of the walk are steep and challenging . You will appreciate the effort put in by settling pioneers in clearing this land and making it productive.

Huia Walk
An easy half day loop track on Mt Huia Farm. Predominantly pastoral with many small stands of native trees. Shell rock so far inland is a fascinating geographical feature. Follow the farm tracks and walk the ridges of the hills to get panoramic views to the Ruahine Ranges and surrounds. The walk passes by two sets of sheep handling facilities where there is often farm work in progress and to be observed.

Rangiwahia Hut Walk
Half day tramp through red beech forest and tussock country to the most accessible area of the Ruahine Forest Park. Detour around a dramatic scree slip; cross the deep gorges on a solid foot bridge; rest by the fresh bubbling mountain streams; appreciate the natural flora and fauna. You can lunch at the hut before returning to the start point, which is the car park just 20 minutes drive from Mt Huia.

What You Need For Weka Walks

• Clothing suitable for tramping outdoors in hot or cold weather conditions the season runs from Spring to Autumn, and with New Zealand’s temperate climate you can expect any type of weather, any time!
• A sturdy pair of tramping boots (although light sneakers are suitable if the ground conditions are dry).
• Day pack.
• Drink bottle and food (if self-catering).
• Anything from the Hodd Cottage list which you deem necessary.
  

Catering Options For Weka Walks

• Self-catering - tea, instant coffee, milo and sugar supplied.
• Foods for breakfast and lunch can be supplied and will be in Hodd Cottage when you arrive, so all you need to do is prepare your meals whenever you feel like eating them.
• A prepared 2 course dinner can be supplied at Hodd Cottage - all you have to do is set the table and do the dishes!
• Walk across to the adjacent homestead and enjoy a hosted meal with pre-dinner drink and nibbles in convivial surroundings where everything is done for you even the dishes!
